Friday Flash Back. That Time we made an award winning character for KNORR foods and DDB Canada.
Working with Knorr and ad agencies DDB Canada and Sons & Daughters, Bigshot Toyworks was given the opportunity to develop and design the “Salty + Pep” characters that were used in this stellar commercial. Bigshot produced more than 40 different characters for consideration for this project, and worked closely with the agency to refine their top picks into the characters used in the final campaign.
The final campaign featured television spots, viral online videos, wild postings, in-store merchandising, and a <a href=”http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/SaltysLife” target=”_blank”>Facebook fan page</a> which quickly garnered more than 10,000 active followers.
Thanks to Salty, Knorr’s Sidekicks line showed a 24% increase in sales from the previous year. Bigshot was contracted to design and produce actual ceramic Salty + Pep shaker sets as a mail-in premium item, and 30,000 sets sold out almost instantly.
The campaign also won Best Integrated, Best In Promotion, and several Silver & Bronze medals at the 2010 Canadian Marketing Association’s year-end award ceremony. Full details are available here: https://vimeo.com/84251419

Chipotle may serve its food fast, but they want their customers to slow down and think about what they’re eating. The company has revolutionized the relationship between consumers and consumption by serving only sustainable meat and investing in a multi-disciplinary educational outreach program. As part of the Cultivate project, Chipotle commissioned Back to the Start, a short animated film which has received over 6.7 million views on YouTube to date.
In response to the positive feedback, Chipotle decided to bring the film’s farmer characters to life, and that’s where we came in.
For urban eaters, farms are an abstract idea and a challenge to embrace. To address this, Chipotle organized tangible experiences (like a food and music festival in Chicago) and universal characters. We were hired to produce collectible toys based on the characters from Back to the Start, and our farmer toy became the physical protagonist for telling Chipotle’s story. To illustrate that pork/carnitas on consumers’ plates was once a pig on a farm, we nested a pig character inside the farmer’s belly. To show how Chipotle only works with farmers who treat animals respectfully, we nested two pill capsules inside the pig. When you open the pills, you’ll find scrolls containing easy-to-digest information about sustainable, humane farming.
Bigshot Toyworks worked closely with Chipotle’s agency on the style and message of the character toys. Unlike most toys which are made of plastic, we rose to the challenge of designing the farmer to be produced in sustainable wood. We then carefully sourced cardboard and paper to ensure that the packaging was not only attractive, but also on point with Chipotle’s philosophy. Research increasingly indicates that people will choose nutritious food over junk food when the former is accompanied by a friendly character. Bigshot’s farmer is (literally) open to this dialogue, and Chipotle’s Farm Team happily “ate up” this popular reward.

A Super fun project for Arnold worldwide and Progressive.
Recently we were asked to design a variety of themed action figures for a series of print ads that featured an action figure version of “Flo” the Progressive insurance brand ambassador. This project was a blast, and It is always a joy to work with such great creative partners.
We have had an amazing string of good fortune to work on some of the most iconic properties, most respected artists and some of the greatest creative partners in the world. I have always been a big admirer of the amazing work that the fine folks at Gentle Giant studios produce and when their creative development team asked us to work with them on a project we absolutely said YES! Much to my surprise and astonishment this first project was a Hajime Soyarama Iron man statue. Soyarama-san has been an inspiration of mine for many many years and it is a great treat to work on a project like this where we can translate his unique style into a wonderful 3D collectible. The Figure is not the usual Sexy Robogirl that Soyarama is famous for , but i think that it is a great mix of his style and the iconic Marvel Armor. The team at GG did a great job on the output, wiring, and the paint looked stellar. Super proud of how this turned out.
Earlier this year we had a tremendous opportunity to nerd out on one of our all time favorite animated film projects. The rad folks at Mondo asked us to develop, sculpt and prototype a film accurate, fully articulated 16” collectible figure of the one and only IRON GIANT!!! One of our favorite films turned into a high end collectible for one of our favorite publishers? We had to get it right. The results of our labor were unveiled at SDCC last week to much fan fare. We look forward to seeing the progress on this figure and anxious to see what other surprises and challenges are in store. Thank you Justin and Brock for your trust and collaboration.

Dead Space 3 1/6th scale collectible Isaac Clarke
We love working with our friends over at ThreeZero HK the projects are always a challenge and their team is one of the best in the world. We were tasked with developing and sculpting the plastic parts of this figure while the costume department labored over the intricate clothing and the master engineers worked out how to make all of this work together in a production environment.
Whenever ThreeZero does something, you know the results will be stunning, and this is definitely proof.
Cute But Deadly Cloaking Zeratul
He’s cute. He’s deadly. He’s invisible-ish (and so is his box). Blizzard’s Cute But Deadly figure line continues with this comical cloaked variant of the not-so-comical Dark Templar (limited to 2,500 pieces).
Another super fun sculpture gig for our good friends at Happy Worker toys and Blizzard entertainment. Can not wait to see this in person. The Cloaking variant looks amazing. Hi fives all around.
